CAN AI CREATE ART?

A Question That the Development of AI has Brought About

By Valentini Sismanidou

In our common era, our lives are centered around our phones and technology. We scroll mindlessly trough posts, photos, videos, etc., with every chance we get. With the success of AI, we come across multiple media made by artificial intelligence on our feed, and we often don't even notice.

Art is a creative form of expression, known for putting shape into words and feelings and allowing everyone to take a peek into the mind of someone else. Art is full of life, as it is one of humanity's greatest creations, with roots going all the way back to our cavemen ancestors. Art is built into our instincts, and though some may have a stronger calling to it than others, it still stands as a beauty made from the heart.

With that being said, people try to connect art with Artificial intelligence, completely ignoring the fact that AI goes against the very core of what art is, which is emotional human creation. They feed these machines illustrations of beautifully crafted drawings made by artists who had to grow and learn the skill of art, only to have their work cheaply stolen and replicated. These images lack soul, have many inconsistencies, and are put zero effort into.

Now, why is that such a problem, you may ask? Well, for starters, art is already a small industry which has many risks as a workplace. Not many people dare to pursuit their dreams as an artist, due to the income being low or due to it being hard to find a job. With AI, these problems only increase, further damaging an already fragile line of work.

Furthermore, big companies will neglect skillful people and instead turn to AI in order to create logos, ads etc, just to save on money that they very clearly have. A very recent example of this is shown on JoJo Siwas’ new album cover, which many people have pointed out as AI.

In conclusion, with AI reaching a new peak and finding its way into the world of art, many people are in danger of losing their job and possibly losing their passion for drawing, as it becomes meaningless when it's not created from the soul of a human, but rather the code of a machine. As humans we should embrace the beauty of creation, and leave it for ourselves, as our machines should take over other aspects of our lives.
